Statewide recording of marriages that take place in Maine began in 1892. Marriage files dated from that year up to 1922 are maintained at the State Archives. Those filed from 1923 onwards to the current time are under the charge of the Maine Office of Vital Statistics. This bureau comes under the Programs/Services Division at the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Information on marriages before 1892 may or may not exist because the mandatory recording of marriages was not yet implemented during that time period.
Maine Marriage Records (1892-1922) is one of the 2 vital records categories obtainable at the Maine State Archives, the other being Maine Death Records. Both certified and uncertified copies for marriage information are offered at $15 and $7 each respectively. Payments should be made to the Treasurer, State of Maine in the form of check or money order. Requests for Maine Marriage Records can be made in person, writing or online. The online option accepts only credit card payment and is undertaken by an external partner. The DHHS itself charges $15 for each certified copy and $6 for each additional one of the same record. Applications for information of marriages before 1892 may only be requested at the clerk office in the town where the marriage was held. They can also be viewed on microfilm at the Family History Library.
